The Biblical Metanarrative: One Plan From Genesis to Revelation
From Genesis to Revelation, Scripture tells one unified story. God is not working with two separate peoples or two separate plans. Instead, the Bible reveals one unfolding plan centered in Christ.
The promises given to Abraham, the calling of Israel, the coming of Christ, and the formation of the Church all belong to one redemptive storyline.
This is the biblical metanarrative:
- One promise
- One Messiah
- One people
- One future hope
This becomes clearer as we examine the key passages.
The One New Man: Jew and Gentile United in Christ
Ephesians 2 gives one of the clearest explanations of God's plan.
Ephesians 2:14–16
"He himself is our peace, who has made both one… that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two."
Paul explains:
- Jews and Gentiles were once separated
- Christ removed the dividing wall
- God created one new man
Not two peoples.
Not two plans.
One new covenant people in Christ.
This is central to understanding biblical unity.
Grafted In: How the Olive Tree Explains Our Unity in Christ
Romans 11 provides another powerful picture.
Paul describes:
- One olive tree
- Natural branches (Israel)
- Wild branches (Gentiles)
Gentiles are grafted into the same tree.
Romans 11:17
"You, although a wild olive shoot, were grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing root."
This means:
- Same root
- Same promises
- Same covenant blessings
Not two trees.
One people of God.
One Coming, One Resurrection, One People in Christ
A Biblical Response to the Church vs Israel Divide
Modern dispensational theology often teaches:
- Two peoples of God (Israel and the Church)
- Two phases of Christ's return (rapture and second coming)
- Multiple resurrections
- A future tribulation specifically for ethnic Israel
However, when we examine Scripture carefully, a consistent biblical pattern emerges:
- One return of Christ
- One resurrection
- One people of God in Christ
This article explores the biblical evidence.
Does the Bible Teach One Future Coming of Christ?
Acts 1:9–11 — Jesus Returns the Same Way He Left
"This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven." — Acts 1:11
This describes:
- A visible return
- A bodily return
- A single return
Nothing in this passage suggests:
- Two returns
- A secret rapture
- A hidden coming
The Second Coming and the Resurrection Happen Together
1 Thessalonians 4:16–17
"For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first..."
At Christ's return:
- Jesus descends
- Trumpet sounds
- Dead raised
- Living transformed
This is clearly the final event.
Jesus Says Resurrection Happens on the Last Day
John 6:39–40
"I will raise him up on the last day."
Jesus repeats this four times:
- John 6:39
- John 6:40
- John 6:44
- John 6:54
Jesus consistently teaches:
- One resurrection
- One last day
One Resurrection of the Just and Unjust
John 5:28–29
"An hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and come out — those who
those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment."
Notice carefully:
- "All who are in the tombs"
- "An hour is coming"
- One resurrection event
- Both righteous and unrighteous raised together
This contradicts the idea of:
- Multiple resurrections separated by years
- Separate timelines for Israel and the Church
Jesus presents a single resurrection event.
Paul Confirms One Resurrection of the Just and Unjust
Acts 24:15
Paul says:
"There will be a resurrection of both the just and the unjust."
Again:
- One resurrection
- Both groups raised together
This aligns perfectly with Jesus' teaching.
The Last Trumpet - One Final Event
1 Corinthians 15:51–52
"We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet."
Key phrase:
- "Last trumpet"
If this is the last trumpet:
- There cannot be another later trumpet
- This is the final resurrection
This matches:
- 1 Thessalonians 4
- Second Coming
- Final resurrection
One event.
Does the Bible Teach One People of God Instead of Israel and Church?
Dispensational theology teaches:
- Israel = Earthly people
- Church = Heavenly people
But Scripture teaches one people in Christ.
No Jew or Gentile in Christ
Galatians 3:28–29
"There is neither Jew nor Greek... for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring."
Notice:
- One people
- One inheritance
- One family
Believers in Christ become:
- Abraham's seed
- Heirs of the promise
This directly challenges the idea of separate destinies.
Abraham's Promise Fulfilled in Christ - Who Is Abraham's Seed?
Galatians 3:16
"The promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring... who is Christ."
The promise:
- Fulfilled in Christ
- Not in ethnic lineage alone
Then Paul says:
Galatians 3:29
"If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed."
This includes:
- Jew believers
- Gentile believers
One people.
Jesus Created One New Man: Jew and Gentile United
Ephesians 2:14–16
"He himself is our peace, who has made both one... that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two."
Paul says:
- Two groups (Jew and Gentile)
- Made into one
- One new man
Not:
- Two peoples
- Two plans
But:
One new covenant people.
Romans 11: One Olive Tree, Not Separate Plans for Israel and the Church
Romans 11:17–24
Paul describes:
- One olive tree
- Natural branches (Israel)
- Wild branches (Gentiles)
Gentiles are:
- Grafted in
- Share same root
- Same promises
Not:
- Two trees
- Two peoples
One covenant people.
Not All Israel Is Israel
Romans 9:6–8
"Not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel... the children of promise are counted as offspring."
Paul teaches:
- True Israel defined by promise
- Not ethnicity alone
- Faith in Christ
This is foundational.
The Israel of God
Galatians 6:15–16
"Neither circumcision counts for anything... but a new creation... peace be upon them, and upon the Israel of God."
Paul connects:
- New creation
- Israel of God
Believers in Christ are described as:
- The Israel of God
One Shepherd, One Flock
John 10:16
Jesus says:
"I have other sheep... they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd."
Jesus foretells:
- Jews and Gentiles
- Becoming one flock
Not two separate groups.
The Church Built on Apostles and Prophets
Ephesians 2:19–20
"You are fellow citizens... members of the household of God... built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets."
One household
One family
One people of God.
One Bride of Christ
Scripture teaches:
- Christ has one bride
Ephesians 5:25–27
Christ loves:
- The Church
- His bride
Revelation also describes:
- One bride
- One people
Not:
- Two brides
- Two covenant peoples
Conclusion: One Return, One Resurrection, One People of God
Scripture consistently teaches:
- One return of Christ
- One resurrection
- One people of God
Not:
- Multiple comings
- Multiple resurrections
- Separate peoples
Christ came to:
- Unite Jew and Gentile
- Fulfill promises to Abraham
- Create one new covenant people
Ephesians 4:4–6 summarizes beautifully:
"There is one body and one Spirit... one hope... one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all."
One body
One hope
One people
One coming
One resurrection
This is the unified hope of the gospel.
