I’ve never been a fan. I could say it’s because I’m South African, but honestly, there are a few cultural things from SA I don’t really like either. I’m okay with people avoiding Halloween — I didn’t even know it was a thing here until I was in my 20s. So technically, I’ve been avoiding it many years without even trying 😅

What does bother me in the whole “avoid or celebrate Halloween” debate is the idea of worship. I think we’ve developed a really low view of what worship actually is.

People say things like, “If you dress up or eat candy, you’re worshipping the devil.” But that’s because we’ve reduced worship to something like standing in church and singing a few songs about God.

By that logic, if a few people hand out candy on Halloween, they’ve somehow worshipped the devil and opened their neighbourhood to demons. But then… why don’t we also say that when people pray or worship, they open their neighbourhood to God?

We don’t say that — because deep down, we know worship requires intentionality. It comes from the heart, from what (or Who) we turn ourselves toward. The idea that someone could “accidentally” worship anything is a cheap view of worship.

I think we need a stronger view of what worship really means.

So do I think a child dressing up and eating candy on Halloween is demonic? No. But I do guide my kids through it — I ask them, “What’s behind what you’re doing?” Not just what they’re doing.

Because ultimately, I want them to learn to be intentional with God in everything.
